Early Signs of Heart Disease

4 min · Educational article

Heart disease may announce itself quietly. A walk that used to feel easy may cause chest tightness or unusual breathlessness. Some people notice palpitations, unusual fatigue, or swelling around the ankles at the end of the day.

Exertional symptoms that settle with rest are particularly important to mention in clinic. So is discomfort in the jaw, throat or left arm that appears with activity. Women and older adults may describe breathlessness or fatigue more than classic chest pain.

Risk factors still matter even without symptoms. Diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and family history increase the value of a preventive heart review.

Early evaluation does not mean every symptom is cardiac. It means a clinician can sort likely causes and decide whether tests are needed. Sudden severe symptoms remain an emergency.

Sudden severe chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or symptoms of a possible heart attack require immediate emergency medical attention. Please call local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. This website does not provide emergency care.
