Practical information for patients and families. It does not replace personal medical advice.

Before Your First Visit

  • Bring a list of current medicines and allergies.
  • Carry previous ECG, echo, blood tests and discharge papers if available.
  • Note when symptoms started, what triggers them, and how long they last.
  • Call ahead to confirm the consulting location and time.

Preparing for Cardiac Tests

  • Ask whether you should take morning medicines before an ECG or echo.
  • Wear clothing that allows access to the chest for ECG leads.
  • For longer monitoring, you will be advised how to keep the device dry and in place.
  • Tests are recommended only when they are likely to guide care.

Heart-Health Habits to Discuss in Clinic

  • Home blood pressure readings, if you maintain them.
  • Walking or activity pattern, and any limits caused by symptoms.
  • Tobacco use, including recent attempts to stop.
  • Diet pattern, sleep and family history of heart disease.

When Not to Wait for a Clinic Slot

  • Sudden severe chest pain or pressure.
  • Severe breathlessness, fainting or collapse.
  • Symptoms that feel like a possible heart attack.
  • In these situations, seek emergency care immediately.

Sudden severe chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or symptoms of a possible heart attack require immediate emergency medical attention. Please call local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. This website does not provide emergency care.
