Understanding High Blood Pressure

5 min · Educational article

Blood pressure is the force of blood against artery walls. When it remains high, the heart works harder and arteries can be damaged over years. Many people feel well, which is why hypertension is often found only during a check-up.

A single high reading does not always mean you have hypertension. Home and clinic measurements, correct cuff size and repeat values help confirm the picture. White-coat elevation and missed high readings at home are both common.

Cardiology care looks beyond the number. The clinician also considers heart symptoms, diabetes, cholesterol, kidney health, lifestyle and medicines already in use. ECG or echocardiography may be advised if there is concern about the heart’s response to long-standing pressure load.

Treatment is individual. Some people improve with salt reduction, weight management, activity and sleep; others need medicines. The aim is safer long-term cardiovascular risk, not a one-size-fits-all prescription.

Sudden severe chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or symptoms of a possible heart attack require immediate emergency medical attention. Please call local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. This website does not provide emergency care.
