What Causes Chest Pain?

4 min · Educational article

Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people seek cardiac advice. The sensation may feel like pressure, tightness, burning, sharpness or heaviness. Location, duration, triggers and associated symptoms all help a clinician decide how urgently evaluation is needed.

Cardiac causes can include reduced blood flow to the heart, inflammation of the heart lining, or other structural problems. Typical warning features include pressure-like discomfort, radiation to the arm or jaw, sweating, nausea and breathlessness, especially with exertion. These features do not confirm a heart problem on their own, but they should not be ignored.

Non-cardiac causes are also frequent. Acid reflux, muscle strain, anxiety, lung conditions and nerve-related pain can mimic cardiac symptoms. The overlap is exactly why self-diagnosis is unreliable.

If chest pain is sudden, severe, or accompanied by fainting, profound breathlessness or a sense of collapse, emergency care is required. For milder or recurrent symptoms, a scheduled cardiology consultation can review history, examination, ECG and further tests if indicated.
