Older adult catching breath after activity — cardiac breathlessness assessment

Cardiac condition

Breathlessness

Cardiac assessment where shortness of breath may be heart-related.

Shortness of breath can arise from the heart, lungs, anaemia, fitness or several conditions together. Cardiology assessment is useful when breathlessness is new, progressive or associated with other cardiac symptoms.

When to seek review

  • Breathlessness that is new or worsening
  • Difficulty walking distances that were previously comfortable
  • Breathlessness with chest discomfort, palpitations or swelling
  • Waking at night short of breath

How evaluation usually proceeds

  • Clinical history to distinguish likely causes
  • Examination and ECG
  • Echocardiography or other tests when indicated

Management

Next steps depend on the likely cause. Cardiac findings are explained clearly, and referral to other specialties is advised when appropriate.

Sudden severe chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or symptoms of a possible heart attack require immediate emergency medical attention. Please call local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. This website does not provide emergency care.
